Joining Birmingham Timebanks
You can join Birmingham Timebanks if you want to use the system to trade time and skills with others.
You can also use the system to donate your time to local good causes and charities that are members of the timebank.
If you are an local group or an organisation that is active in Birmingham, you can open an account here and use it to reward volunteers or to collect donations of time and skills from supporters etc.
If you are part of your own network of people who trade time amongst themselves (for example a childcare circle or a group of car-sharers) you can use the Timebank system to keep a record of hours (even if you only want to advertise time swaps privately amongst people you know).
Birmingham Timebanks is free to join. Joining does not mean to have to trade. How you use the system is up to you.
You can either join by coming along to a local Timebank meeting if there’s one that is convenient for you to get to; or you may apply here on this website. When you are accepted as a member, you will be given a username and password which you will need to sign in to the system. If you go to a local meeting you will also get a membership card with your username and password on it (keep it somewhere safe).
Please note: you should not use Birmingham Timebanks to trade your skills and time with anyone you do not trust or know well enough to judge in terms of the reliability of their work; safety and security etc. Birmingham Timebanks is a place for trading and keeping a record of trades. It does not assure the quality of any service offered and members are not subject to Disclosure and Barring checks. If you are thinking of using the system to trade childcare; services for looking after young people; or adults; or valuable property, for example, you must take the same care that you would if you were buying these services in any other way.

How do I sign in to use the system?
You need to sign on the website if you want to use the timebank system. You can do this at the top right of any page on the site where it says ‘Login to the Members’ Area’. Put in your username and password and press the login button – and you’ll be logged in.
What if I have lost my username and/or password?
Your username will normally be your first name and your second name all lower case without any spaces, eg: Michael Jackson would be michaeljackson; and Mary Berry would be maryberry. If you are a member of Birmingham Timebanks, but you have forgotten the details you need to login, then either:
- use the contact form to get in touch and we’ll remind you about your username and set you a new password
- go to a local meeting of a timebank and the manager there will be able to tell you your username and reset your password.
If you haven’t joined Birmingham Timebanks, you won’t have a username and password yet. You need to join (see above) to be able to login and use the system!
How can I ask for other people’s skills and time?
You need to be logged in to do this (see above). When you are logged in, you can:
- search and view adverts which other members have put up advertising what they have to offer
- create your own advert saying what you need so that other members can see how to help
How can I offer the skills and time I have?
You need to be logged in to do this (see above). When you are logged in, you can:
- search and view adverts which other members have put up advertising what they need – you may find you have what they want
- create your own advert saying what you have to offer so that other members can find you
Can I go back and edit anything I have posted on the system?
Yes, when you are logged in, you can edit an advert you have placed. The easiest way if you just want to add some extra information – like a contact phone number for example, is to find the advert on the system and click on ‘Leave a Reply’.
- on the advert – which you can find using the searches (see above). You need to click on the edit button (in the bottom right of the ad)
- via the View/Edit Your Profile section. You can get a list of the adverts you have posted under the ‘My Posts’ tab and they can be edited from there.
How can I use the system to ‘pay’ hours to someone?
You can pay hours to any other Birmingham Timebanks member using the Make a Transfer form. You will need to know the person’s username. Usually this is their first name and second name in lower case without any spaces, eg taylorswift or fionabruce etc. If you type in the first few letters of a username, the system will make some suggestions based on existing members. If the person or group you want to pay isn’t yet a member of Birmingham Timebanks, then get them to join (see above) so you can give them some time!
When you have chosen the person or group that you want to paywill need to input the number of hours you want to transfer. The system works on decimal hours which means, for example:
1.5 = one and a half hours
0.25 = a quarter of an hour, ie 15 minutes
3.0 = three hours exactly
When you have entered the number of hours you wish to pay, press the Transfer button. The system will move the number of hours you have said from your account to the person or group you have specified.
How do I remind someone to pay me some hours?
When you do someone a good turn using the system, let them know your username so that they can pay you the hours needed to cover your time. If they don’t pay you straight away then you can remind them by posting a reply to their advert – giving your username and the number of hours to pay.
If you have a dispute about payment (including someone refusing to pay) then contact a timebank manager (see below) and explain the problem.
How can I check my time balance?
You can check how many hours you are in credit, or owe, using the View Your Time Account page.
What if I have any other problems using the system?
If you have any problems using the system or disputes with other users, please either:
- use the contact form to get in touch and we’ll do our best to help
- go to a local meeting of a timebank and the manager there should be able to sort things out.
For local timebank managers
The help and advice here is for people who are managers of local timebanks in the Birmingham Timebanks network. It covers:
How do I add a new user?
To add a new Timebank account (which can be for an individual or a group, organisation or project etc) you need to be signed in using your username and password and have admin privileges. When you have signed in as normal on the site, you should see the black ribbon at the top of the page which gives you access to the admin section. Click on the Dashboard option under ‘Birmingham Timebanks’ and then on the menu that opens in the left margin:
select Users > ‘Add User’. Scroll down to Add New User. Add the username, which will be based on firstnamelastname (no spaces or capital letters). Add the contact email address (if the user does not have an email address, then you can either set one up for them at gmail or similar OR you can fill in a dummy email address @birminghamtimebanks.org.uk). Select ‘Author’ from the dropdown box and tick the box below relating to email notification. In the ‘Choose Groups’ box select Registered and the name of the local timebank(s) they want to join. Press the Add New User button.
Once you have created a new user – as above – you can reset their automatically generated password with a more memorable strong password using the routine below.
How do I reset a user’s password?
Follow the advice above to get to the Birmingham Timebanks dashboard and then:
Select ‘All Users’ from the Users menu. Enter the username of the account you want to amend and click to search. Click on the Edit label under the username to call up the record. Scroll down to the Account Management Heading and press the Generate New Password button. You can either have the randomly generated password; or type in a new strong password in the box. When completed, press Update User at the bottom of the page.
Can I edit other people’s postings on the system?
When you are logged in you should see an Edit label on each post or comment. You can use this to amend posts and comments. Alternatively, go to the Posts menu in the left hand margin and choose the post to amend from the listing there under All Posts.
How can I adjust time balances?
When you are logged in and have called up a user account as above, you should see an Hours tab on the user record. Click on this and scroll down to Adjust Balance.
How can I help people make sure they pay any hours they owe?
What if I need reminding what to do or hit a problem managing the system?
